Growing in Grace – All Came to Pass

“Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.” ~ Joshua 21:45

Spoiler alert!  The book of Joshua, that we’re examining through this devotional series, ends with this simple statement: not one word of God’s promises failed.  ALL CAME TO PASS!

What an incredible reminder to us that our God is a covenant-keeping God who doesn’t come through some of the time, he comes through all of the time; who doesn’t fulfill some of his promises, he fulfills all of them.

What were some of the promises that came to pass?  From Joshua 1 alone we find the following:

  • Joshua 1:4 – I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.
  • Joshua 1:5 – No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
  • Joshua 1:9 – Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

While these were promises God made to Joshua and the house of Israel, they are no less true for us today.  We can move forward as individuals (like Joshua) and as part of the people of God (like the Israelites) in a posture of strength and courage because his promises–of presence, and rescue, and rest–are as sure to us as they were to them.

In fact, they are even more sure for us because we know who God’s fulfilled promises pointed to: the person and finished work of his son, our savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

As you seek to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord in these unusual times, cling to this reality, stated by the apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 1:20, “all the promises of God find their yes in him; that is why, through him, we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”
